School Leaver Traineeships

Rotations

As a trainee you will be given the opportunity to work in three different areas of the department to give you a wide range of experiences.

With the diversity of the department, you could be working in a heritage area, a marine area or a corporate area.

Rotations give you the opportunity to expand your knowledge of the department and its activities, and to build networks with colleagues within the department.

Some of what we do in our rotations

Coen - I work in the Operational Support Unit as part of the Heritage Division. I have been involved in setting up meetings, (organising equipment like laptops and projectors and organising catering). I've organised accommodation for senior members of staff and international delegates as a result I've got to learn a lot about what the department does in relation to International heritage and how some International Heritage organisations operate.

Ali - I work in Approvals and Wildlife Division, in the Monitoring and Audit Section. Part of my responsibilities include ordering new files, and setting up projects for others in my section. I work very closely with my supervisor, who invests a lot of time in me and supports me. We also have a lot of fun in my section - We have two pet fish, Tony and Phil. Being in the School Leaver Program has given me a lot of opportunities to experience many area within the department, which has helped me decide on my future career.

Hannah - I currently work in the Wetlands section of the Water Group. During this rotation, I have been working on administration projects that support and guide the members of the Wetlands section. I have been working on a 'How-to' Toolkit for the procedures and requirements needed for the procurement, endorsement and publishing stages of a Wetlands project. I have also been given the opportunity to visit a wetland site, and other sites that are important to the Water Group, such as the National Arboretum.

Lauren - I work in the National Network in the Arts Division. Our section looks after the funding for Indigenous programs around Australia. In my job I get to talk to a lot of people from all over Australia. I have also made heaps of great contacts that have so much experience in their field and have taught me so much!

Isaac - I am currently working on the Marine Operational Support Unit in Marine Division. As part of my job working in the Operational Support Unit, I do a range of IT and Accommodation tasks that support the division. I enjoy working in an Operational Support Unit because it gives me a good understanding of how the Division operates

Sophie - I work in Workforce Development as part of Workforce Strategies Division. Our area is a human resources section and we get to work with other members of staff on a daily basis. As a trainee I have been involved in planning and running a conference, setting up intranet pages, and liaising with external contacts and senior members of staff. As a result I have done a lot of networking and met some great people!

Susie -I work in Payroll and Remuneration in Workforce Strategies Division. Our area is in charge of keeping track of everyone's pay checks and making sure all the staff are paid the right amounts at the right time. This has been a really good area to work in, with a really fun team of people for support and guidance! I have had the opportunity to work at the same level as the rest of the team and have learnt heaps of new information in the process.

Kate - I work in The Cultural Property Section. Working in this department is great because not only is the work really diverse and interesting, the people are really welcoming and helpful. This traineeship is a really good opportunity, and I suggest that anyone who isn't sure what they want to do once they finish school apply.
