Australasian environmental compliance conference this week in national capital

An environmental compliance conference this week has attracted major speakers to the nation’s capital including world renowned environmentalist David Suzuki, ACT Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment Maxine Cooper, and Monash University Professor Owen Hughes.
The seventh Australasian Environmental Law Enforcement and Regulators neTwork (AELERT) conference is an opportunity for environmental regulators to discuss and highlight their experiences in the field.
This year’s theme, Diversity in Environmental Regulatory Responses, will showcase the positive outcomes that AELERT and the member agencies have been achieving.
“Bringing more than 250 compliance officers from all Australian and New Zealand jurisdictions together to share their knowledge and experiences has great benefits,” federal environment department spokeswoman Rose Webb said.
“We can learn new ways of operating, share lessons learnt, get ideas to improve our compliance and enforcement efforts, and ultimately, do our job of protecting the environment better.
“And that’s why the department is proud to be the founding member of AELERT and continue to provide a leadership role for the network.”
David Suzuki will be delivering the keynote speech on the greatest environmental challenge. Other speakers include Professor Owen Hughes who will present on public policy ideas that have failed, Dr Joe Smith from the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator will report on gene technology regulation in Australia.

The conference will be held at Rydges Lakeside, Canberra Thursday and Friday, 4–5 November 2010.
