The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities will hold public information sessions over the next week to discuss Round Two of the Private Irrigation Infrastructure Program for South Australia.

Information sessions will be held in Renmark, Loxton, Waikerie, Mannum, Barmera, Morgan and Murray Bridge.

The Private Irrigation Infrastructure Program for South Australia is a competitive grants program with up to $110 million available to improve water efficiency. Water savings generated from the program will be shared between project proponents and the environment.

Applications will be assessed competitively against the program criteria, as set out in the program guidelines, including on value for money grounds. Successful applicants will be required to transfer at least half of the water saved through their project to the Commonwealth to use for environmental purposes.

Water savings returned to the environment will count towards the Australian Government’s commitment to ‘bridge the gap’ between existing diversions and the Sustainable Diversion Limits to be set under the Basin Plan.

All interested South Australian irrigators are encouraged to attend the sessions, which will provide the opportunity to receive a detailed outline about the program and to ask specific questions about the application process.

The deadline for applications is 4.30 pm (AESDST) on Tuesday, 15 February, 2011.
