Developer pays for rehabilitation after clearing key habitat

A developer has agreed to pay $80,400 to be used for revegetation and rehabilitation after wrongfully clearing land at Picton East, WA.
Coppercats Pty Ltd and Gallivantour Pty Ltd will pay the sum as part of an 'enforceable undertaking' agreement with the federal environment department.
The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities was made aware of the unauthorised clearing of around 6.7 ha of vegetation in Picton, WA.
This vegetation would have provided key habitat for species listed as threatened under national environment law, including the Western ringtail possum which is vulnerable and the endangered Carnaby's black cockatoo.
The southern Swan Coastal Plain supports the largest remaining population of Western ringtail possums, and provides essential breeding, foraging and movement habitat for the species. The area is also important for the Carnaby's black cockatoo, and supports both breeding and foraging.
The company has cooperated with departmental officers throughout the investigation and has made an undertaking to pay money towards rehabilitation of vegetation for the affected threatened species.
The money secured will be used by the WA Department of Environment and Conservation for revegetation and rehabilitation projects.
