Bushwalker accident in Kakadu

A pair of thongs were the undoing of a forty year old bushwalker hiking along a remote track in Kakadu National Park on Monday 6 June.
The man was hiking along the rugged Jim Jim Falls walking track when he slipped and fell, sustaining a painfully injured ankle.
It took the combined efforts of two park staff, two nurses from Jabiru Medical clinic, tour guides from Kakadu Dreams and Wilderness 4WD Adventures and some twelve clients to complete the rescue. They all helped carry the hiker over 500 metres of difficult rocky terrain.
The Park hired a helicopter to airlift the man to Jabiru for further medical treatment.
Kakadu Park Manager Glenn Meade today called on bushwalkers to take care when hiking this dry season.
" It's important to wear sturdy boots and carry at least one litre of water for every hour of walking – and make sure you drink it! " Glenn Meade said.
"And be prepared for the hot sun – wear a shady hat and cover up or use plenty of sunscreen."
Every year a number of hikers are injured on some of the more challenging walking tracks and others are treated for heat illness.
The bushwalker has gone to Darwin for further treatment.
