Online Photo Gallery
The Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts Online Image Database has been developed to provide the community with access to our photographic collection.
We are very happy to provide this resource to help promote environmental issues and for educational purposes - new images are added to the database regularly.
Copyright and photo reproduction fees
The image database contains images the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts owns and that are copyright cleared and available at reasonable rates for use by the media, students and industry organisations.
Student use
If you are a student researching environment issues, you can reproduce a low resolution image for no charge providing:
- you ask us for permission for reproduction
- the use is within a report or presentation submitted for assessment only and is not made available for sale or published in more than 10 copies.
- you can download the photograph from this web site and no library search is required*.
- the Australian Heritage Photographic Library is acknowledged.
*If you require us to search the collection for particular subjects and provide low resolution scans, library search time can be purchased at $40 per hour.
Low resolution use $120
Low resolution files of photographs in the image database on this web site are generally around 432 by 282 pixels in jpg format.
The cost of using low resolution images downloaded from the photographic library for use on a web site or another screen based presentation is $120. This allows you to use the photograph indefinitely on one screen. You must specify the URL of the specific file in the reproduction request. Any changes to the specific URL in the future will incur further charges.
High resolution use $160
The cost of single time use of photographs for reproduction in displays or printed publications is $160. This includes standard library search (1 hour), high resolution scan to your specification, CD and postage.
Additional library search time can be purchased at $40 per hour.
Special reproduction
Prints or duplicate colour transparencies for slide talks will be charged at cost plus $40. These cannot be used for commercial purposes or for electronic or print publishing.
Conditions of use
- These charges apply to the use of images for a defined purpose, and do not imply purchase. Images are available for single time use only.
- Duplicates remain the property of the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, and must be returned promptly on completion of the stated use.
- All uses must acknowledge the photographer and the Department.
