Ecologically sustainable development and environmental performance
Under the Australian Heritage Commission Act, when undertaking an action on a Register of the National Estate place, Australian Government ministers and government decision-makers had to consider whether or not their actions would have a significant impact on the heritage values of a place. They had to be satisfied that there was no feasible and prudent alternative to the taking of that action, and be satisfied that all measures that can reasonably be taken to minimise the adverse effects would be taken.
Under section 30 of the Australian Heritage Commission Act, the commission provided advice relating to heritage values that contribute to better long-term and short-term decision-making and contributes to the conservation both of biological diversity and the ecological integrity of places.
The commission also undertook research on the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings in preparation for the production of a booklet to mark the Year of the Built Environment.
