Introduction

This annual report has been prepared in accordance with established reporting requirements for all Commonwealth departments and agencies.

The report focuses on reporting program performance and the achievement of program objectives. This information is set out in the
performance reports for each departmental program which provide details of major issues and significant achievements in which each program played the key role in 1996-97.

A brief summary of departmental achievements is contained in the letter of transmittal.

In respect of other reporting requirements, sub-program 6.1 provides a summary of key developments relating to internal and external scrutiny, and social justice and equity. More detailed information is provided in the various Appendixes of the report. A list of the grant programs administered by the Department is at appendix 12 along with a brief description of the programs. Details of grant recipients for 1996-97 are available on request.

A listing of other material relating to the operation of the Department which is not included in the annual report but which is available on request is provided on page 317.

This overview also provides charts setting out the program structure of the Department; senior management; the relationship between programs, divisions and branches of the Department; a table providing a reconciliation between programs and appropriations for 1996-97; and a summary table identifying aggregate financial and staffing resources data.
