Sustainability Report 2005-2006
Department of the Environment and Water Resources, 2007
Australian Antarctic Division Environmental Performance
Greenhouse Gas Emissions
EN8: Greenhouse gas emissions
Goals 2005-06
Continue to work towards converting all energy sources at Antarctic stations to renewable energy sources including continued development of hydrogen as an energy source
Investigate contractual arrangements and costs related to the provision of detailed information concerning waste generated by AAD
Performance 2005-06 and trends
Total emissions of CO2-e (excluding waste) in 2005-06 were 47 954 tonnes, up 8189 tonnes or 21% from the previous year. The previously reported figure for 2004-05 of 1 483 766 tonnes was incorrect, due to a conversion error.
Key sources of emissions in 2005-06 include burning diesel for base power and heating, as well as fuel use for shipping and aviation.
| Source | 2004-05 (tonnes CO2-e) | 2005-06 (tonnes CO2-e) |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping | 13 109 | 14 161 |
| Kingston | 20 297 | 23 625 |
| Mawson |
6320 (all stations) 39 (petrol) |
2182 |
| Casey | 3120 | |
| Davis | 3950 | |
| Macquarie | 916 | |
| Total | 39 765 | 47 954 |
Shipping fuels paid for by AAD between October 2005 and April 2006 amounted to 5 187 303 litres, and resulted in 14 161 tonnes of CO2-e. This is up 8% from 13 109 tonnes emitted from shipping in 2004-05. These figures exclude shipping-related emissions where AAD does not pay for fuel used.
No new work on renewable energy took place in 2005-06. Work did take place regarding investigating contractual arrangements and costs related to the provision of detailed information on AAD’s wastes, including resulting greenhouse emissions.
Commentary
AAD’s greenhouse gas emissions are mainly from electricity generation for Kingston and the Antarctic stations. This produces more than 99% of AAD’s non-waste greenhouse emissions. The figures above also do not include any data from Heard Island.
Goals 2006-07
- Continue to work towards converting all energy sources at Antarctic stations to renewable energy sources including continued development of hydrogen as an energy source
- Investigate contractual arrangements and costs related to the provision of detailed information concerning waste generated by AAD.
