Programmes for protecting and restoring biodiversity are outlined in individual reserve management plans. These plans also identify areas of habitat and habitat types within the scope of particular parks or reserves.

Protective and restorative actions can include rehabilitation of degraded habitat, removal of feral animals, control of invasive weeds, habitat plantings and track maintenance.

Commentary

A long-term forest rehabilitation strategy in Norfolk Island National Park has been developed to maintain and increase forest health. The 10-year strategy will improve the overall forest health and integrity of forest areas and enhance the survival, protection and rehabilitation of native and endemic species. The strategy combines broad- scale weed control, targeted weed control around specific communities, targeting individual weed species at certain times of year, chipping woody weeds to provide mulch and ground cover, and planting native species to reflect forest regeneration processes and to establish endangered and vulnerable communities. The area to be treated is divided into 10 areas or coups and every two years each coup receives 400 hours of dedicated attention during at least one month in the two-year cycle. The first two-year cycle has just been completed.
