Goals 2005-06
Review building gas consumption and consider options for reducing consumption in two parks by June 2006
Performance 2005-06 and trends
Natural gas is used at the ANBG, where it heats buildings and greenhouses. Total consumption for 2005-06 was 5 491 304 MJ, an increase of 8% compared with 5 086 753 MJ in 2004-05.
LPG is used at:
- Uluru for heating and running an industrial incinerator and used 12 318 litres (317 GJ). This is a 30% reduction, compared to 17 541 litres (441 GJ) in 2004-05.
- Booderee to provide hot water at camping grounds 7262 litres (187 GJ), a 40% increase compared to 5342 litres (134 GJ) in 2004-05
- Kakadu for cooking in the ranger stations, consuming 3263 litres (84 GJ), compared to 2990 litres (75 GJ) in 2004-05 (up 9%).
Building gas use was not reviewed in 2005-06.
Total consumption of LPG at all sites was 22 843 litres (587 GJ).

Total consumption of natural gas and LPG combined in 2005-06 was 6078 GJ, an increase of 6% from 5737 GJ in 2004-05. The total cost of Parks gas use in 2005-06 was $108 842.
Commentary
The total consumption of LPG increased by 2%. This was mainly due to an increase in the number of visitors using the camp ground at Booderee. LPG consumption at Uluru was reduced due to warmer than average winter temperatures. Gas use at the ANBG increased 8% due to a colder than average winter requiring additional heating of glasshouse spaces, which are approximately 20 years old and seep heat from their frames. LPG use at Kakadu was impacted by the late arrival of a bulk tanker.
Goals 2006-07
- Review building gas consumption and consider options for reducing consumption in two parks by June 2006
- Maintain gas consumption at current levels or reduce them relative to climatic conditions and visitor usage.
