Performance 2005-06 and trends
Indirect energy for this indicator refers to the amount of energy it took to produce and deliver the energy we used, such as grid-connected electricity. Measuring indirect energy use assists in managing total energy consumption and vulnerability to rises in overall energy costs through supply chains.
The table below outline the direct and then indirect energy consumption associated with Parks’ activities. The efficiency factors are derived from publicly available efficiency factors for Australia from the International Energy Agency for 1998 (published 2001), and used in the GRI energy protocol. These factors do not include the energy costs of earlier stages in the fuel cycle (such as resource extraction).
| Energy type | Direct energy 2005-06 (GJ) | Efficiency factor (generation efficiency plus transmission and distribution losses) | Indirect energy 2005-06 (GJ) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purchased electricity | 9380 | 3.03 | 28 421.4 |
| Generated electricity (diesel) | 32 283 | 0.01* | 322.83 |
| Natural gas and LPG | 6078 | 0.20 | 1215.6 |
| Transport diesel | 15 839 | 0.01 | 158.39 |
| Petrol | 2828 | 0.01 | 28.28 |
| Avgas | 340 | 0.01 | 3.4 |
| Avtur | 18 | 0.01 | 0.18 |
| Total | 66 766 GJ | 30 150 GJ |
* Factor based on fuel input only―no data available on efficiency of local generators.
Commentary
As the above table indicates, indirect energy use for Parks for 2005-06 is 45% of direct energy use, in GJ terms.
Indirect energy here refers to the energy required to deliver to our parks the energy we used. Indirect energy use in our supply chain is covered by EN19.
