EN5: Total water use
Goals 2005-06
Monitor consumption in Darwin over 2005-06
Establish a strategy to reduce water use in Darwin
Establish a system to ensure that JFS usage figures can be reported for 2005-06
Performance 2005-06 and trends
Water usage at the Darwin office has increased from 724kL to 1403kL during this period, a rise of 94%. Water usage increased significantly from December, and this can be partly attributed to an increase in aquaculture work in the ERISS research programme. A strategy to reduce water consumption was not developed during 2005-06 but will be addressed during 2006-07.
Water usage figures were collected since November 2005 for the Jabiru Field Station (JFS). During the 8 months data was collected, a total of 5690kL was used. This includes usage by a private company using the JFS glasshouse facilities to propagate seedlings for commercial sale.
Commentary
After investigation, it appears that the increase of water used at the DEH Darwin facility is not proportionate with the increase of water used as part of the aquaculture programme. Further assessment of water usage trends will need to be done in order to ascertain if there is another activity that could be contributing to the large increase in water usage.
Goals 2006-07
- Monitor water usage trends for 2006-07 to determine the cause of the increase in water consumption in 2005-06
- Develop a strategy for reducing water use at the DEH Darwin building.
