SSD’s main functions are environmental protection and research. During 2005-06, SSD’s entire budget was allocated to the performance of these functions. As part of DEH, SSD contributes to the DEH outputs identified below from the Portfolio Budget Statement (PBS). A full breakdown of SSD financial statements can be obtained from the DEH 2005-06 Annual Report.

Commentary

SSD is comprised of two branches: OSS and ERISS. OSS is responsible for supervision, audit and policy functions in relation to uranium mining in the Alligator Rivers Region. ERISS conducts environmental monitoring and research into the effects of uranium mining in the region and conducts research on ecology and conservation of wetlands in the context of tropical river systems.
