Performance 2005-06 and trends
As at 30 June 2006, DEH employed 2062 staff, up 64 (3%) from 2005. These staff are located in Canberra, Darwin, Antarctica, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, Perth, Sydney, Bendigo, Launceston, Port Hedland, Longreach, Cairns, Townsville, and in the National Parks (including external territories). Of that 2062 people:
- 67% (1379) were located in the ACT, up from 64% in 2005
- 73% (1515) were full-time ongoing (permanent) employees, up from 72% in 2005 (74% in 2004)
- 9% (177) were part-time ongoing (permanent) staff, up from 8% in 2005 (9% in 2004)
- 15% (305) were full-time or part-time non-ongoing (temporary) staff employed for short periods (also 15% in 2005, 14% in 2004)
- 3% (65) people were casual employees, down from 5% in 2005 and back to the same level as in 2004.
Including casual staff, the 2004-05 average percentage of non-ongoing staff across the Australian Public Service (APS) was 7.7%. In 2006, DEH was at 18% non-ongoing staff, down 2% from 20% in 2005. Much of our use of non-ongoing staff can be attributed to the seasonal operations in the Antarctic and in the National Parks.
Commentary
Figure 2 above shows the trend of reducing DEH staff numbers at the APS1-4 levels and growth in the Executive Level 1 (EL1) band, reflecting the policy development and programme delivery work carried out by the department.
