About the report
The Department of the Environment and Heritage has produced its second Triple Bottom Line (TBL) report on the environmental, social and economic performance of its operations. The second report expands on the first by including on-ground environmental performance data about our Antarctic, Parks and Supervising Scientist Division's field operations.
DEH's production of public reports on its sustainability performance supports our work with industry and the public sector on better environmental management and disclosure.
The report uses indicators from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), including their sector supplement for public agencies. Using GRI indicators ensures comparability with other reporters.
Highlights of the report include:
- energy use in the Department's central offices - now 52% of the Australian Government's target
- measurements of indirect greenhouse gas emissions, including from staff air travel
- how the Department handles the challenges of environmental management in sensitive areas such as the Antarctic and national parks, and
- coverage of the Department's social and economic performance across all sites and divisions.
A selection of environmental and social performance indicators in the report were subjected to an assurance process by the Australian National Audit Office and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The assurance statement has been signed off by the Auditor-General and can be found at the back of the full report.
