B Engineering (Civil/Environmental) (First Class Hons)
M Engineering by Research, submitted November 2004

I have a long held interest in the environment. Outdoor activities such as bushwalking and cross-country skiing instilled in me an awe and appreciation of the natural environment. I also enjoyed learning about how the natural environment interacted with the built environment, which led me to complete a degree in Civil / Environmental Engineering.

After completing my degree, I worked in Indonesia with a local environmental education NGO. It was fascinating to see in this work how projects such as Australian suburban recycling and collection could be adapted to a different lifestyle and situation. I then worked for two years on road and drainage design with an engineering consultancy company. This provided me with project management experience. However, this had taken me too far away from my interest in the environment. I became especially interested in water issues as water restrictions were becoming permanent around Australia in both rural and urban areas. I decided to change my work path and undertook a Masters of Engineering degree in Melbourne. My thesis examined the decision making structure for utilising stormwater in the urban environment to replace potable mains water.

I saw the graduate program of the Department as a great opportunity to work in different areas, combining all of my experience and interests. It also provided a way for me to return to Canberra, a city I love living in because it is so much part of its natural environment.
