Background

Having grown up in Melbourne and following a stint in the UK, I moved to Canberra nearly 8 years ago to begin a PhD in Environmental History. Among other things, my thesis addressed cultural identity and nationalism in the context of the material remains of the deep past and geological heritage. I summarised the current methodological state of play in geoheritage and developed the beginnings of a theoretical framework for its interpretation. Following my interest in heritage, and a background spanning the human and natural sciences, I decided to try my hand at bureaucracy, as a potential pathway to testing my half-baked ideas on an unsuspecting public. While I love research and writing, after 15 years at university as a student and an academic, last year was the perfect time to branch out into a different sort of institution. Working in the Heritage Division for my first two rotations enabled me to indulge my continuing fascination about why we value the things we do. Even more importantly, in the short time I've been at DEH I have been privileged to work with many dedicated, passionate, compassionate, funny people.
