Bachelor of Science (Hons)

Background

I grew up in Canberra and after year 12 I went straight to uni to do a science degree. In my first year I found the only subjects I particularly enjoyed were in biology, particularly ecology and zoology, so I pursued subjects in these areas throughout the remainder of my degree and completed my honours year in behavioural ecology. During honours I spent almost 5 months conducting field-based research on the breeding behaviour of the Superb Fairy-wren in the Australian National Botanic Gardens.

Following uni I applied to the DEH Graduate Program. It seemed like the ideal way to become involved in ecology at a broader and more strategic level as a change from the on-the-ground research I had experience in. The Graduate Program was ideal for me as it provided a range of learning and development opportunities and exposed me to the work of the Department across a wide range of issues. Moving around the Department has enabled me to meet a wide range of people and gain experience in issues I was previously unfamiliar with. I have really enjoyed my graduate year and I would highly recommend the program as a great way to enter the public service.

First placement

Industry, Communities and Energy Division/Industry Partnerships Branch/Greenhouse Challenge Plus Section/Member Services and Communications Team

Second placement

Marine Division/Marine Conservation Branch/Marine Bioregional Planning East section

Third Placement

Approvals and Wildlife Division/Environment Assessment Branch/NES Wildlife Strategies section

Permanent Position - Policy Officer

Approvals and Wildlife Division/Environment Assessment Branch/NES Wildlife Strategies section

My role in this section will be the same as my third rotation responsibilities. I wanted to stay in this section as I enjoy the challenge of policy development and the opportunity to work on matters within my academic background. This role enables me to combine my interest in science, particularly ecology, with developing strategic approaches to managing native Australian flora and fauna.
