Background

After five years at uni, I was ready for an adventure so I took off to work in biological reserves in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands for a few months. I came back to do honours, spent a few months chasing wombats around Wilsons Promontory and then a few more months in front of a computer writing up. After that, I got a job with the SA Dept of Environment and Heritage on Kangaroo Island, climbing trees to catch koalas and relocate them to the mainland. Next stop was back in Victoria, working for the Dept of Primary Industries in Gippsland as a Pest Management Officer. My normal job was working on weed and fox control programs, but for my last month I was deployed to work as a logistics officer at the 2006/07 Gippsland fires.

First Placement

Parks Australia, Parks Strategic Development Section

My main role was developing a Park Planning Manual to assist with the preparation of management plans for national parks. The manual explains the complicated bureaucratic processes in plain, simple English so Traditional Owners (who often have English as a second language) can understand them.

Second Placement

Environment Quality Division, Product Stewardship Team

"Product Stewardship" is about managing the environmental impacts of products, particularly when they become waste. I did a research project on the potential environmental and health impacts of energy saving light bulbs, which contain mercury. I arranged a meeting with the stakeholders and prepared a report that will inform the decision about whether to introduce a national recycling scheme for light bulbs.

Third Placement

Natural and Cultural Projects, Kakadu National Park, Parks Australia Division

The NCP team manages the natural and cultural resources in Kakadu National Park by commissioning and undertaking research and maintaining significant habitat as well as heritage and cultural sites. I prepared reports on the heritage significance, condition and safety issues of two historic heritage sites, the Mudginberri Buffalo Abattoir and the Nourlangie Safari Camp. I researched the history of the sites and consulted with traditional owners and other stakeholders to determine the heritage significance. My reports will be used to decide whether to spend money conserving the sites or demolish them, and whether to allow visitors to access and learn about the sites. I also had the opportunity to participate in other NCP work such as fauna surveys and mapping.

Permanent Position

Technology Futures Team, Technology and Transport Branch, Industry, Communities and Energy Division

The Technology Futures Team is currently working on developing carbon capture and storage ('clean coal') technology and alternative fuels such as biodiesel.
