I have always had an appreciation of the natural environment, and have spent time volunteering both here and overseas on various conservation/research projects.

My honours year was spent researching the thylacine (Tasmanian tiger), trying to glean information on its biology from skeletal remains and fragmented reports that are unfortunately all that remain of this unique animal. This work highlighted to me the finality of extinction and the effect that policy decisions can have on an entire species.

Upon finishing my honours I decided I wanted to play a role in developing environmental policy and applied to the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (at the time the Department of the Environment and Water Resources) graduate program.

First Placement

Sustainable Fisheries Section, Marine and Biodiversity Division

The Sustainable Fisheries Section administers the fisheries aspects of the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, which include assessing the ecological sustainability of Australia's fisheries and the granting of export approvals.

My responsibilities included:

Second Placement

Strategic Policy Section, Policy Coordination Division

The Strategic Policy Section provides executive advice and support to the Minister and Executive, assists with decision making processes, and provides advice and briefings on strategic policy issues.

My responsibilities included:

Third Placement

Solar Cities Team, Renewables and Energy Efficiency Division

The Solar Cities team is responsible for the delivery of the Australian Government's Solar Cities Program, an energy initiative bringing together industry, business, governments and communities to rethink the way they produce and use energy, providing information that will assist in the development of future sustainability measures.

My responsibilities included:

For my final placement I have returned to the area of my second rotation.
