ISSN 1441-9335

Letter of transmittal

The Hon Dr David Kemp MP
Minister for the Environment and Heritage
Parliament House

Dear Minister

In accordance with section 63 of the Public Service Act 1999, I present the Annual Report of the Department of the Environment and Heritage for 2001-02.

The report includes the Annual Report of the Supervising Scientist in accordance with subsection 36(1) of the Environment Protection (Alligator Rivers Region) Act 1978. For the first time the report also includes the Annual Report on the Operation of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and a statement made under section 518 (2)(a) of the Act on non-compliance with time limits.

The Annual Reports on the operation of the Ozone Protection Act 1989 as required by section 68 of that Act and on the operation of the Hazardous Waste (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Act 1989 as required under section 61 of that Act are also included. The Director of Meteorology provides a separate Annual Report but a brief report of the activities of the Bureau as a departmental agency is included here.

A report on the operation of the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986 as required under Section 47 of the Act is also included. Responsibility for administering the Act was transferred to the Department in November 2001.

Over the past year the Department's staff have demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm to the development and implementation of key environmental policies and programmes. I would like to thank all staff for their significant contribution.

Yours sincerely

Roger Beale
