National Coastal Policy

(Departmental output 1.3)

To develop a Framework for a National Cooperative Approach to Integrated Coastal Zone Management and an implementation plan for consideration by the Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council; and to ensure that coastal water quality protection plans that are prepared and implemented are consistent with the national approach.

The Government is committed to working with the states and the Northern Territory to develop a new coastal policy to address coastal management issues. The Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council developed a Framework for a National Cooperative Approach to Integrated Coastal Zone Management (framework paper) and in April 2003 agreed to its release for targeted consultation with key stakeholders in the Commonwealth, states and Northern Territory. During the consultation, stakeholders were asked to focus on actions on a national scale. Stakeholders proposed a number of actions that will be considered during development of an implementation plan.

The Ministerial Council will consider the framework paper and development of an implementation plan in October 2003.
