Performance 2005-06 and trends
With the assistance of the Supervising Scientist Division of DEH, Parks has identified 19 sites that have been impacted by historical uranium mining and processing activities at Gunlom in Kakadu National Park (occurring between 1956 and 1964). Parks is working with the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, the Supervising Scientist Division and the Traditional Owners of the land to rehabilitate these mine sites. A total of approximately 33.5 hectares of land has been impacted. The levels of impact range from minor physical disturbances, through to areas of low-level radiological contamination. These sites are scheduled to be rehabilitated by 2009-10.
In Kakadu and Uluru there are several sites that have minor contamination from asbestos and Parks has begun to establish an asbestos management plan and register of these sites.
- Establish a register of asbestos-contaminated sites by June 2007.
