Planning Information

The pressures on existing biodiversity can be reduced if planning decisions are made with satisfactory consideration of natural resource management issues. The following tools and information can assist in this endeavour.

Zoning - Opportunities and Examples

Restrictions on activities legitimately undertaken on privately owned land can be controlled through implementation of specific zones in planning schemes or provisions. Examples will be included on this page at a later date.

Planning Schemes/ Provisions

New South Wales

Access to Regional Environmental Plans can be gained through either Planning NSW or Austlii sites. An example of an innovative approach to the incorporation of biodiversity conservation into Local Environmental Plans can be found at Wyong Shire Council.

The primary State Environmental Planning Policies (SEPPs) influencing the consideration of biodiversity conservation in planning decisions include:

Northern Territory

Information on the Northern Territory Planning Scheme, including Land Use Objectives and Incorporated Documents, can be found on the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment site.

South Australia

Development Plans can be viewed through the Planning SA site.

Tasmania

Information on assorted Local government planning schemes is available on the Tasmania Online page - search for Town Planning.

Victoria

The Planning Schemes page from the Department of Infrastructure provides access to all relevant planning information.

Additionally, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment provides information on Native Vegetation Retention Controls, an important tool for local government to regulate vegetation clearance.
