Dairy industry growth strategies have been directed at reducing assistance and making the industry more commercially oriented. Since 1985-86, Federal Government assistance to the dairy industry has declined by over 65 per cent. Consistent with commitments from the GATT Uruguay Round, support is scheduled to continually decline until the year 2000, after which no specific Federal Government measures will remain for dairy. Over the past ten years, the production of milk in Australia has increased by one third and the volume of exports has more than doubled. This has been at a time when there has been a 10 per cent reduction in cow numbers and the number of dairy farms has declined by 30 per cent. Rationalisation within the processing sector has facilitated export competitiveness.
