Case study - Indicators for sustainable agriculture

The Standing Committee responsible to the Australian Ministerial Council on Agriculture and Resource Management (SCARM) established an expert group on Indicators for Sustainable Agriculture in 1992. Subsequently, this expert group prepared a discussion paper which identified four key indicators covering:

SCARM is undertaking pilot testing of the indicators at the regional level, which will evaluate the efficacy of the relevant attributes. All States and the Northern Territory are participating in this pilot testing phase. A final report on the pilot phase is expected to be completed in October 1995.

The participating agencies and their projects have been nominated in the knowledge that they will assess different attributes in different situations, recognising that some attributes will not apply to all industries, land users or regions.

The results from the Indicators of Sustainable Agriculture project will have wide ranging significance to sustainable natural resource management. For example, it is expected that the indicators will be used in the 1997 evaluation of the Decade of Landcare Plan and will contribute to National State of the Environment reporting.
