Case Study - Education, public awareness and training

Lead in the environment campaign

The Commonwealth Government, in cooperation with the States and Territories, and industry and community groups, has embarked on a program to reduce human exposure to lead. In early 1994, the Commonwealth EPA conducted a national public education campaign to encourage drivers of pre-1986 cars to use unleaded petrol if their car could run it. A price differential of two cents per litre was introduced to encourage the changeover.

Following on the success of the 'Lead in Petrol' campaign, the Commonwealth EPA plans to similarly increase public awareness about the risks of 'Lead in Paint'. Public information materials are now being disseminated to alert people about the danger of disturbing old lead-based paint, present in many older homes.
