Public Meetings - Environmental Impact Statement on Sydney's Second Major Airport

Media Release

2 August 1996

A second series of public meetings is to be held as a part of the public consultative process associated with the development of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on Sydney's second major airport.

These latest meetings follow those held earlier this year when proposals for a second airport for Sydney were confined to Badgerys Creek.

On 22 July the federal Environment Protection Agency released for public comment a new set of draft guidelines for the EIS. The guidelines identify the issues to be considered by the EIS.

These latest draft guidelines were released following the Government's decision to broaden the environmental assessment process to consider a full scale airport at Badgerys Creek, and to include consideration of an alternative site--the Holsworthy Military Reserve in Sydney's south-west.

Public meetings will be held in Parramatta, Holsworthy and Blacktown on Sunday 11 August and Monday 12 August.

The executive director of the EPA, Mr Barry Carbon, said the EPA was seeking the public's assistance in drawing up an appropriate set of guidelines.

"If the environmental assessment is to work it is essential that the public make a contribution to the process at an early stage.

"The final guidelines that come out of this process are what drive the Environmental Impact Statement which will then be prepared by the Department of Transport.

"The public meetings will enable the EPA to explain the Environmental Impact Statement process to the public and, in turn, enable the public to contribute to the guidelines, " Mr Carbon said.

Meetings will be held at:

Sunday 11 August 10 am Parramatta Masonic Club

163 George st. Parramatta

3.30pm Holsworthy High School

Huon Crescent, Holsworthy

Monday 12 August 7.30pm Bankstown District Sports Club
