Mr Stephen Hunter has been appointed Head of the Biodiversity Group, Environment Australia.

In announcing the appointment, Mr Howard Bamsey, Acting Secretary, Department of the Environment, said Mr Hunter would commence on 19 January 1998.

'Mr Hunter has many years experience in senior public sector management including Director of the Bureau of Transport and Communications Economics and Acting Secretary of the ACT Chief Minister's Department,' Mr Bamsey said.

'He brings to the position wide and varied knowledge of the processes of Government, a keen policy sense and a capacity to forge key relationships with stakeholders.

'The Biodiversity Group is responsible for an extensive range of nature conservation functions including Commonwealth legislation for endangered species, whales and the regulation of the export and import of wildlife.

'Mr Hunter will have responsibility also for Environment Australia's carriage of programs delivered through the Natural Heritage Trust including Bushcare and the National Reserve System.

'The Group also covers the statutory obligations of the Director, National Parks and Wildlife, managing or co-managing with the Aboriginal traditional owners seventeen parks, reserves and other land and marine protected areas.'

Mr Bamsey said Mr Hunter has represented several Departments in senior forums, including some at Ministerial level, both in Australia and overseas.

'He will bring both leadership and the capacity to provide strategic biodiversity policy guidance to an important and dynamic Group within Environment Australia,' Mr Bamsey said.
