Manly Council
Manly Council has a leading local government role in both sustainability management and greenhouse gas abatement, and is a proud and strong participant in the CCP Plus program. Having reached all 5 milestones and now working through CCP Plus, Manly Council to date has prevented 28,280 tonnes of harmful greenhouses gases from entering our atmosphere.
Manly has a keen interest in greenhouse gas reduction initiatives as climate change will have a significant impact on our coastal foreshores and many low-lying areas - for this reason we endeavour to continue and strengthen our commitment to work toward a sustainable future. We encourage our already highly environmentally aware community to support us in this drive and work together to achieve our goal of reaching a 50 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2010.
A word from the Mayor
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Manly Council is thoroughly committed to environmental education for our community, operating the Manly Environment Centre (MEC). The MEC door is always open with our environmental educators providing free education and advice to all, as well as encouraging people to utilise the vast array of education materials available.
- The Enviro Saver program was launched in January 2007 and is a partnership between Fieldforce Environmental and Manly Council.
- Fieldforce energy auditors are able to provide free visits to residences and businesses and provide a free energy and water audit. In addition, they can provide advice on energy and water saving fixtures and devices.
- The Manly Green House Challenge is a project funded by the Demand Management and Planning Project (an initiative of Energy Australia, Transgrid and Department of Planning) to reduce residential energy and peak energy use.
- The Residential Energy Liaison Officer has recently sent a survey to residences that will assist in designing a program to reduce residential energy use.
Travel
- Manly Council has developed an Active Transport Pack which is a comprehensive guide to active transport in our LGA. It encourages walking, cycling and public transport as an alternative to driving.
- Manly Council also celebrates bike week each year to further encourage our community to make use of our extensive cycle ways through our exceptional scenery of bush, beach and lagoon. Council has recently approved plans for an East-West corridor that will link existing bike networks and provide greater options for cyclists and commuters. Council has also encouraged a car share scheme in Manly to accommodate those residents that only need to use a private vehicle occasionally.
Corporate
- Manly Council has made a commitment to 'practice what we preach' by continually improving our own greenhouse gas abatement.
- Council has had major lighting upgrades in the Town Hall; upgraded the air conditioning system in our Art Gallery to be as environmentally friendly as possible; have options for low emission vehicles as part of our vehicle fleet; and work to integrate sustainability principles for new buildings and extensions.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
Manly Council resolved to make the following amendments to the Local Air Quality and Greenhouse Action Plan, as recommended by Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Australia in response to the Toronto Declaration:
- That Council join the 50 per cent Club, a group of leading Councils from around the world committed to a reduction target of at least 50 per cent by 2010, while recognising that the responsibilities of the levels of Australian government make this target difficult to achieve in comparison to other Councils world-wide.
- Council is committed to remain a leader in greenhouse gas abatement through our continuous environmental education and encouragement to our community to work together to achieve our goals. Council also has a number of projects on the horizon, including lighting upgrades for parks & sportsfields; community facilities audits & lighting upgrades; and a new, state-of-the-art, energy efficient level addition to our library which will serve as a fantastic educational tool.
- Council has recently created a Climate Change Working Group that will be examining how Manly can address climate change. The Working Group will be examining issues such as greenhouse gas abatement and climate change impacts and risk management.
