Tweed Shire Council recognises how important local action is when it comes to addressing climate change. We remain committed to the ongoing reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, with particular emphasis on water efficiency, energy efficiency and waste wise practices for Council and the community. I am very grateful to the CCP program for assisting the Tweed to play an active role in climate change mitigation and adaptation.'
A word from the Mayor
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Council has given away 75,000 compact fluorescent light globes and 9,400 water efficient showers to shire residents utilising the NSW Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme.
- Estimated annual greenhouse gas reduction of 9,000 tonnes of CO2(e).
- Participation in 'Tweed Climate Action Now' a community based organisation whose aim is to 'reduce greenhouse gas emissions through local action'.
- Ongoing water, energy and waste education.
Travel
- Constructed nearly 4km of new footpaths and over 2km of new bike paths.
- Produced a 'local transport guide' detailing public transport and pedestrian networks.
- Promotion of 'smart travel behaviours' via the Council newsletter.
- Developed 'transport' indicators for the annual State of the Environment Report.
Corporate
- Vehicle downsizing in the passenger vehicle fleet.
- Trial of a hybrid vehicle in the passenger vehicle fleet.
- Energy Savings Action Plan developed for Council facilities.
- Revolving Energy Fund continues to set aside savings made on energy efficiency measures.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Minimum energy and water efficiency standards for Council facilities.
- Ongoing community education / facilitation on 'reducing individual emission levels'.
- Implementation of the Energy Savings Action Plan.
- Energy efficiency improvements to the streetlight network.
