Leaded racing fuels or Avgas

From 1 January 2009 new arrangements apply and leaded fuel passbooks are no longer valid for the purchase of leaded fuel for motor and water sports purposes.
A pamphlet is available about supplying or buying leaded racing fuel or avgas. To request a copy write to fuel.quality@environment.gov.au
Supplying Avgas
You can only supply leaded racing fuel or avgas for non-aviation use if you hold an approval from the Australian Government, or if you are a regulated person covered by an approval granted to another entity. Airport fuel suppliers selling avgas for non-aviation use must also meet these requirements.
You can only supply leaded racing fuel or avgas to:
- current members of a recognised* motor sport association or club - evidence might include a current membership card or a letter of introduction from the association or club;
- dynotuners; or
- another person who provides evidence that they are an approval holder or regulated person.
You can generally only supply leaded racing fuel or avgas in sealed containers with capacity up to 200L to motor club members and dynotuners, unless otherwise approved by the Australian Government.
Significant fines apply for suppliers who do not follow these rules.
To find out whether you are a regulated person, contact your fuel distributor or manufacturer. If you are not a regulated person and want to supply leaded fuel, you will need to apply for an approval or be listed by your fuel distributor or manufacturer as a regulated person on their approval.
To see the current list of approval holders, regulated persons and recognised motor sport association or clubs, visit www.environment.gov.au/racingfuels or call 02 6274 1425.
