International Ozone Day

The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is held each year and the theme for 2007's celebrations was 'Celebrating 20 years of progress in 2007'.

Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol

2007 marked the 20th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer arguably the world's most successful multilateral environmental agreement. Since 1987, the Montreal Protocol has resulted in a 95 per cent reduction in global emissions of ozone depleting substances. Read the United Nations Environment Programme information kit on the 20th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol .

Australians contribute to ozone layer preservation

At the 19th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol last year in Canada, Australian organisations received awards in recognition and celebration of their contributions to preserving the ozone layer.

Australian award recipients included the Cancer Council of Australia, the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, Department of Defence, the Victorian Environment Protection Authority and Refrigerant Reclaim Australia. Read more about the Australian award recipients.
