Introduction

[After Edwards 1996: 287]
The Aganaidae have previously been considered a family (as Aganaidae or as Hypsidae) or a subfamily of the Arctiidae. Many of the Australian species were revised by Rothschild and Jordan (1896a, 1896b, 1897){ROTHSCHIW1896b}{ROTHSCHIW1896a}{ROTHSCHIW1897A} (as Aganaidae). The Indoaustralian fauna was included in Seitz's Macrolepidoptera of the World by Seitz (1914){SEITZA1914B} (as Hypsinae) and the world fauna listed in Lepidopterorum Catalogus by Gaede (1932){GAEDEM1932C} (as Aganaidae). The Australian species were reviewed by Turner (1921d){TURNERA1921d} as the Hypsidae but Turner also included Nyctemera Hübner and its allies.

Digama Moore is widespread in northern Australia but all the other species are confined to rainforest or monsoon forest habitats. All the species occur outside Australia except Asota iodamia (Herrich-Schäffer).
