Introduction
The common names for beetles of this family are indicative of their habits: furniture beetle — they bore into and damage furniture and timber; drugstore and tobacco beetles — they feed on and damage stored products; and spider beetles — one lives on remains of arthropds in spider nests. Other species live as inquilines in ants nests. One hundred and eighty-nine species in 38 genera are recorded here for Australia; Lawrence & Britton (1991: 564) gave an estimate of 225 species for Australia.
