Introduction

The higher level classification of caprellideans is decidedly unstable. Several family level schemes have been proposed, based on traditional taxonomic methodology (see McCain 1970; Laubitz 1993; Takeuchi 1993). In this work we follow Takeuchi (1993) because he groups the genera in the least number of families and because there is some support for at least two lineages among caprellideans (see Laubitz 1993; Takeuchi 1993). Based on their highly characteristic body, form caprellideans have always been grouped at suborder rank within the Amphipoda. But the discovery of caprogammarids (Kudrjaschov & Vassilenko 1966) gives a clear indication of a relationship between caprellideans and gammarideans.

New phylogenetic evidence (Myers & Lowry 2003) indicates that podocerid and dulichiid amphipods are a part of a large caprellidan clade which forms part of the suborder Corophiidea as conceived by Barnard & Karaman (1983).
