This cosmopolitan family has its largest development in the Holarctic. It is particulary species-rich in temperate arid areas of the Palaearctic where it is dominated by the large homogeneous genus Coleophora Hübner with over 1000 species. The Australian fauna, like those of Africa and South America, is small.
The world fauna was catalogued by Vives Moreno (1988) and many publications deal with subsets of the Holarctic fauna (Patzak 1974; Landry & Wright 1993; Baldizzone 1994).
The few Australian species were described by Meyrick and Lower. The Australian fauna had been revised by Baldizzone 1996 who recognises 13 species of Coleophora including the widespread C. alcyonipennella (Kollar) and transfer the genus Corythangela from the family Coleophoridae to the Batrachedridae. Most Australian species occur in dry sclerophyll forest, mallee and temperate arid areas. The present list is based on Baldizzone (1996).
