Compiler and date details

  • Cyrtaucheniidae Simon, 1892.

Introduction

The Cyrtaucheniidae are basically African, Asian and American mygalomorphs, represented in Australia by only the monotypic genus Kiama. Like the Idiopidae, they were originally included in the Ctenizidae until a revision of the infraroder Mygalomorphae (Raven 1985).

Diagnosis

Differ from Idiopidae in that the distal sclerite of the male palp is a complete cone with a small medial haematodocha, and either by the biserially dentate claws or the uniserially dentate cheliceral furrow.
Mygalomorphs with the apical segment of the posterior lateral spinnerets triangular or digitiform. Distal segments of legs I and II of females with fewer spines than leg IV. Spines few or absent on lightly scopulate anterior tarsi. Male palpal bulb with small median haematodocha and conical distal sclerite. Rastellum on mound or process or absent. Paired claws of females wide, with numerous teeth on 2 faces or teeth on one face and medially.
