Introduction

Species in the family Lernaeopodidae parasitise elasmobranch, holocephalan and actinopterygian fishes. Most females in this family attach themselves to their host fish with a small, specialised chitinous structure, the bulla, which is positioned in the frontal region of the cephalothorax. The family includes 48 genera, and over 200 species.
See Boxshall & Halsey (2004: 774) for more details as well as a key to the genera.
