Family LEUCONIDAE G.O. Sars, 1878

Introduction

The Leuconidae are a small family of 12 genera and 118 species. Three genera and three species are known from Australian waters. The most recent revision of the family is Watling (1991).

 

Diagnosis

Male. Antenna 2 flagellum extending beyond thorax or flagellum not extending beyond posterior border of carapace, peduncle with 5 articles. Mandibles truncate. Pereopod 1 simple. Pleopods present. Uropod endopod with 2 articles. Telson not articulated, fused to last pleonite.

Female. Antenna 2 minute, much smaller than antenna 1, peduncle with 2 articles. Mandibles truncate. Maxilliped 3 exopod present. Pereopod 1 simple. Pereopod 3 exopod present, fully developed or absent. Uropod endopod with 2 articles. Telson not articulated, fused to last pleonite. (Generated from Watling & Gerken 2002)
