Introduction

The Lygistorrhinidae is a monogeneric family of about seventeen species of fungus gnats (Evenhuis 2008), belonging to the Mycetophiloidea, and putatively the sister group to the Mycetophilidae (sensu stricto). Only one species is recorded from Australia.

Adult Lygistorrhinidae are readily recognised by their elongate mouthparts which are many times the length of head, and by the very reduced wing venation with only two branches of the radius and CuA2 complete to the margin, and the medial sector with two fragmentary and one almost complete branch.
