2006 - D.C.P. Rentz, added to the earlier database, the core of the extended list provided kindly by David Eades from the World List
2002 - D.C.F. Rentz, CSIRO Entomology, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia, for Pyrgomorphidae and Acrididae
Orthoptera is used here in the restricted sense, that is, the cockroaches, mantids and stick insects are not included. Here we include the terrestrial insects known as the short-horned grasshoppers, pygmy grasshoppers, sand gropers, katydids (bush crickets), crickets, raspy crickets, locusts and the like. More than 20,000 species are known worldwide. We list 1482 species in 432 genera in this checklist.
These insects range in size from a few millimetres to about 11 cm. The greatest diversity of species is probably in the tropics, but considerable diversity occurs in the extensive eucalyptus scublands and heath habitats that are found over most of the continent.
The original partial Orthoptera checklist in the Australian Faunal Directory, including only Pyrgomorphidae and Acrididae, and prepared by David Rentz in 2000, is now updated to include all Australian species (February 2006). The core of the extended list was provided kindly by David Eades, taking data from the world list of Orthoptera - data provided originally by David Rentz, who then added details of types and bibliographic information. Rick Johnson edited the final copy.
