Introduction

Philichthyidae are internal parasites that are most commonly found within marine actinopterygian fishes, although some species may parasitise elasmobranchs. Philichthyids are not true endoparasites as, through their pore of entry, they remain in contact with the external environment. Nine genera are included in the family, and 54 species. See Boxshall & Halsey (2004: 624) for more details as well as a key to the genera.
