Family SYNOTAXIDAE Simon, 1894

Introduction

Synotaxids build filmy, domed webs, not unlike those of Pholcidae, in dark hollows in forests.

The Synotaxidae are members of the superfamily Araneoidea, and some species currently attributed to the family were previously placed in the Theridiidae or Linyphiidae.

Diagnosis

Australian synotaxids all belong to the subfamily Physogleninae which are small to medium-sized spiders with a heavily sclerotised pedicel and anterior portion of the abdomen, which may serve as a stridulatory organ.
