Introduction

Most taeniacanthids are parasites of marine actinopterygians and elasmobranch fish, and are usually located on the gills, branchial cavity and body surface of the host. Some taeniacanthids live in association with sea urchins; these species are commonly found in the oesophagus of their hosts. Fourteen genera are recognised, and 91 species. In addition, there is one genus inquirendum. See Boxshall & Halsey (2004: 674) for more details as well as a key to the genera.
