Family TETRABOTHRIIDAE Linton, 1891

Introduction

The list of 15 species included here exceeds that of Mawson et al. (1986) because the current list includes species found in the Australian Antarctic Territories, a region excluded in their checklist. Synopses of the genus, such as those of Schmidt (1986) are based on the revision by Baer (1954). Prudhoe (1969) suggested that some species considered synonyms by Baer (1954) should be considered valid pending further study. Prudhoe's (1969) species list is used here.

The major works on Australian species of the group are those of Johnston (1937) and Prudhoe (1969), based respectively on the collections made by the Australasian Antactic Expedition of 1911-1914 and the British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Expeditions of 1929-1931, both under the command of Sir Douglas Mawson.
