- Twenty four additional taxonomic Groups, including taxa in Crustacea, Myriapoda, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, Amphibia and Aves, were loaded.
- The update includes an additional 374 families, 3,624 genera and 17,108 species. Nearly 39,000 species are now available on the Australian Faunal Directory site.
- Bibliographies for Mollusca (~7,000) and Lepidoptera (~1,700) are available through the Groups page and the new Bibliographic search facility.
- Search page has been updated and two new search facilities added: bibliographic and host-taxon search. Try them!
- All graphics have been updated and improved across the Australian Faunal Directory. More are in preparation.

- A considerable amount of new data added to the Australian Faunal Directory
(AFD) web site and many parts have been upgraded.
Twelve additional taxonomic Groups, comprising 503 families, 2,134 genera, 6,769 species and some 7,000 bibliographic references, loaded.
- Some 42% of the estimated described fauna known from Australia is databased, mostly at Catalogue level. Nearly 19,000 species are now available on the AFD site and we hope to make a further 15-20,000 species available in 2002.
- The Main Checklist to family updated and new links added.
- Download a checklist. This new feature provides users with the option to download a checklist of any group either as a Rich Text file or an HTML table for import into a spreadsheet programme such as MS Excel.
- Maps to show world distribution of taxa at genus and species group levels are now available.
- In the groups page, the Summary of the Australian Fauna is now split into the Estimated Numbers of the Australian Fauna and the Details of Taxa Databased and has been updated.
- Taxon statistics for each group included in the Level 1 Introduction.
- Context-sensitive links from the data to the Format of the Australian Faunal Directory included.
- Users are encouraged to investigate the Advanced Search and see how various options can be used to obtain information such as a bibliographic reference or to list introduced taxa or to list the types for a selected group in a selected museum.
