This series provides a comprehensive account of the current knowledge of the biology, taxonomy, evolution and history of discovery of the animals which live in Australia. This information is described at family level and set in a global context. The series is copiously illustrated in colour, line drawings and halftones.

Information for each taxon is provided at the phylum or class level and at the family level. For each level, data is provided on classification, morphology and physiology, natural history, biogeography and phylogeny, fossil record, economic significance and conservation. This is coupled with illustrated keys, glossaries and a detailed index. The text is meticulously researched, contributed by invited specialists, and profusely illustrated by Australia's finest faunal illustrators.

About the books
The Fauna of Australia collate and present the vast array of knowledge on Australia's fauna in a readily understandable form. They will appeal to any institution active in biological sciences and form an invaluable reference for policy makers, tertiary students, professional and amateur biologists, management authorities and all interested members of the community.

Of the originally conceived 10 volume series, only 5 volumes were published. In future, any similar detailed faunal accounts for groups in the Australian Fauna will be published independently.

From 1981–1994 this series was published for ABRS by the Australian Government Publishing Service. From 1994 it has been jointly published by ABRS and CSIRO Publishing.
