Australian Biological Resources Study

Checklist of Australian Lichens and Allied Fungi

OUT OF PRINT

Superseded by Flora of Australia Supplementary Series 19

In this volume Dr Filson documents approximately 2800 lichenised, lichenicolous and allied fungi from 405 genera which occur in the Australian States and mainland Territories as well as on Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and Macquarie Island.

Each accepted name in the genus-based listing is followed by details of its publication and an indication of its Australian distribution. In addition, names and publication details of more than 2300 synonyms, nomina nuda and doubtful, misapplied and otherwise excluded names are inserted under the appropriate species or genus. An index to all names at specific and infra-specific ranks is appended.

This checklist will be an essential reference for those studying the taxonomy of the many poorly understood groups of Australian lichens. For this reason it represents a valuable contribution to our understanding of these unique organisms.

About the Author

Dr Rex Filson has a well-deserved international reputation for his research on Australian lichens. He spent over 20 years as a curator and researcher at the National Herbarium of Victoria, and in retirement has continued his lichenological work at Booral, N.S.W. During his research career he has been the ‘trail-blazer’ in modern Australian lichenology. As such, his contribution exceeds that of his numerous collections and publications, which include several indices and checklists, as well as monographic accounts. The present Checklist will undoubtedly be one of his most important legacies to future Australian lichenologists.
